The Cape 31 Invitational promises to be three days of intense racing, with seven South African teams taking on Elian Perch’s team from Hong Kong, Mike Bartholomew’s ‘Tokoloshe’ team from the UK and Filip Engelbert’s Swedish team ‘Elvis’.
Apart from the Swedes, the International teams will feature some of South African ‘greats’ who have moved to other shores to pursue their careers in the yachting industry. Mark Sadler, a regular ex local sailor now turned pro on the Med and Caribbean circuit and who now works for North Sails in Palma Majorca, will be the tactician on board Team Orion from Hong Kong. Paul Wilcox, two times Volvo Ocean Race sailor and now part of the South African flagged 52 SuperSeries TP52 ‘Phoenix’ will be jumping on board with Fast 40 Solent regular ‘Tokoloshe’. The South African teams will also feature some sailing greats, ex Americas Cup Team Shosholoza trimmer David Rae will be helming the well prepared ‘Team Nitro”; Olympic 470 sailor Roger Hudson will be doing tactician duties on the equally talented Malcolm Hall’s Cape 31 ‘Magic’. Team Magic recently won the Fareast 28 World Championships. Another notable sailor on Team ‘Magic’ is the 2017 29er World Champion, Alex Burger. Tina Plattner and Tony Norris’s 52 SuperSeries Team ‘Phoenix’ will be competing on their Cape 31 ‘TNT Racing’ with tactician Gareth Blackenberg, a Laser podium finisher at Semaine Olympique Francaiseas. Tina is also the only woman helmsman to have won races in the 52 SuperSeries.
The Cape 31 Invitational could not happen without our partners the V&A Waterfront and Western Cape Government
