from Carbotech, was appointed to build the Cape31 locally.

Input was gathered from those that had sailed Flame, and it was decided to make some minor changes.

Prior to construction of boat #2, the deck mould was retooled to accommodate:
1) A sliding hatch,
2) A new, simplified mainsheet pod
3) A new companion-way hatch incorporating the jib up/down control system.

This pushed back the launch schedule by 3-4 weeks. To date hulls # 2, 3 & 4 are sailing with hulls # 5 and 6 due to launch in the next weeks, and production for 7 & 8 following asap. The construction time is between 3-4 weeks per boat.

Hurricanes in the USA have caused some minor material and equipment supply issues, but plans are being made to fast-track delivery.

We recently received news that Southern Spars Cape Town will be closing down and the price of the rigs is increasing. This is unfortunate.

However, we have managed to negotiate that the next three rigs will be built at the current price.

The next three South African boat orders (ie hull 9, 10 &11), if ordered before December 2017, will be kept at the same discounted price of R1.75 mil. plus vat (excluding sails, electronics and safety items).

These boats will be due for launch in March, April & May 2018.

As before, clients can take advantage of any discounts that Noordhoek Sailboats receive in sourcing sails, electronics or safety items.

During the "Leg Two" stopover of the 2017/18 Volvo Ocean Race, the inaugural Cape 31 invitational regatta will be hosted in the VOR Race Village at the popular V&A Waterfront.

This will take place during the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd December 2017.

The regatta will be an ideal opportunity for the Cape 31 teams to check each other out and get to know their new race machines before tackling the Cape 31 circuit planned for 2018.

Racing will take place in Table Bay under the majestic Table Mountain.

Michael Giles has combined a BSC Construction Management degree from NMMU (then UPE) and a passion for sailing.

He grew up sailing an Optimist Dinghy on the banks of the Swartkops River, in Port Elizabeth. He cut his teeth on the 7 foot 9 inch craft tacking back and forth and learning how brutal the tides could be to progress against them.

Michael went on to represent South Africa at two Optimist National events and secure South African Sailing Colours twice in a Laser Dinghy. The highlight of his sailing career was representing South Africa as part of Team Shosholoza campaigning for the oldest sporting trophy in the the world – The Americas Cup.

In addition to competing in the Americas Cup in Valencia and a host of other high profile events around the world, he has project managed leading boat building projects in South Africa and abroad.

His constant drive for performance, quiet nature and team leader skills has made him a sought after member for many projects.
